Welcome, Families!
Here are some updates from the middle of 3rd Quarter...
- We will be going to the Shedd Aquarium on Tues, March 20 - We will be starting a fish unit together... there may be fish as classroom pets very soon... - There are no progress reports for kindergarten, but I will be sending home a general assessment that I will be giving in the next few weeks to show how your student is doing. Please remember it is ONE measurement, ONE way to look at how your child is progressing. - Our classroom pet, Star, has been home with several students. Several other students keep reminding me that they have not had a turn to take her home. We will get to everyone who signed up... be patient, lil' grasshoppers! - Our Student of the Weeks have been very fun to celebrate! - Please continue to read the front and back of the paper newsletter that comes home each Monday. I also post the pdf here on the Weekly Newletters tab. Things are going well in 104!

Dr. Seuss week was too good to end! We trickled a few more of his books and activities into this week.
Please note that I will be out of the classroom on Monday and Tuesday, due to a previously scheduled trip. My apologies, but Mrs. Burks will cover and the children are excited! Field trip money and forms are due this Friday (the trip is on March 20). We will learn about maps for the rest of the week. Please see the newsletter and Class Dojo updates for any more information. Newsletters are uploaded to this site weekly. DR. SEUSS WEEK THIS WEEK!
Other things to note:
This week will continue our celebration of Black History. Last week we studied George Washington Carver, reading a book about him in three parts, using him to inspire our writing exercises to imagine what we would invent if we were scientists.
This week, Andy Carter will visit us again, as he wrote the book on George Washington Carver (!) and has written a song about him!! We are lucky to have him willing to be so generous with his time. We also will have our Black History assembly on Wednesday and Ray School will have a school-wide evening celebration that same day. We will study Bessie Coleman this week and Ruby Bridges next week. For more details, please see the weekly newsletter that comes home every first day of the week and watch for Class Dojo updates. The newsletters are posted on this site as well, under the Weekly Newsletters tab. We have a big week ahead of us!
- Wednesday is Valentine's Day. Please note the information provided on the paper newsletter: We will dub it “Be Extra Kind Day” and students MAY bring a small valentine for EVERY student (25) but you do not have to. You may put your child’s name on them to say who they are from, but please do not address the “TO” part so that we can ensure everyone has one. Please do not send any container or mailbox. Please do not send any sweets. We will decorate paper bags together to collect our “Be Extra Kind” messages as a class. We will find sight words on message hearts as well. DONATIONS needed by FEBRUARY 12 for classroom activities, please consider helping if you can! 3 bags of candy conversation hearts 5 bags of heart marshmallows 3 boxes of toothpicks 100th Day of School! A letter went home: 100th Day is Thursday, February 15th. The kids are really excited about the 100th Day of school. The day will be packed full of fun 100th Day projects. We need your help! **Every student needs to count out 100 snack items and bring them in a big plastic bag on the 100th Day of school. Here are a few ideas for 100 snacks: chocolate chips, goldfish, gummy bears, cheese balls, cheese its, cheerios, fruit loops, gummy worms, etc. Please do not include 100 pieces of wrapped candy. We will make a special 100th Day snack with all the items and share them with everyone. PLEASE make sure your child’s hands are CLEAN when counting out the 100 food items. **Decorate a 100th Day shirt with your child. Draw, paint, puff paint, stamp, or glue 100 items onto a white shirt and they will wear the shirt to school on the 100thDay. Trust us, students will LOVE this shirt and never want to take it off! Here are a few ideas: googly eyes, beads, ribbons, stickers, paint, stars, etc. **We need volunteers from 9:15 am- 10:45 am. We will be doing some great centers and we need your help. If you can volunteer please sign the form below and send it back to school with your child. Each class needs at least 4 volunteers. **Wish List: 100 Red Solo Cups. If you are able to donate these to your classroom, please email your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Please let me know through email if you have not already if you can help on Thursday! Thanks! [email protected] All other updates/photos/announcements are going out through Class Dojo. If you have not signed up, please do so! Let me know if you need help. This marks the end of the 2nd quarter for CPS. Your children are half way to 1st grade! How exciting but also crazy (from this parent's point of view!). The classroom is energetic, fun, dynamic, and engaged.
Please reach out to me if you need anything along the way. Highlights: - Puppy and Snail visited us to remind our children about how to be responsible, specifically when going to the bathroom on their own. - Penguins were a big hit this week! A student brought in the best book, "Periwinkle's Journey" which further reinforced what we had learned about penguins being from various climates, not just the South Pole (like the Galapagos Islands). - We started subtraction. - We got a postcard from Ms. Weidler in Germany!! And heard through email from Ayla in Morocco! If you lose your newsletters, I'm uploading them to this website under the tab at the top. The end of our second week together has me feeling like it's been a lot longer than that, in the sense that we are really used to each other now! Highlights of the week include a field trip, hot cocoa/pj day, growing crystals, and meeting our class pet. If you have not signed up for Class Dojo, please do or reach out to me to find out how if you cannot do so. Lots of germs have gone around, with absences, so please be mindful of that. We also have had a few bathroom accidents without extra clothes. All students need to have a spare set of clothes in their cubby for these situations. They happen and we like to be able to help the student as much as possible. CPS has published the calendar for next school year so that families can plan ahead. You can find it here:
I shared this with the children- Ms. Weidler sent me a message to ask how the students were doing and to say hello! She has been very busy with visa paperwork but sent a few photos of sites in Germany and the view out of her window. They seemed pleased to hear from her. I will try to upload the photos once I get them off the Whats App message and to a computer.
Hello 104 Families,
I am doing almost all of my communicating through Class Dojo. Every student should have received an invitation to join last week in their child's folder and/or through email. If you have not joined, please do! You are missing out on great photos and updates and reminders! If you need help, please email at [email protected]. We had a lot of fun this past week and I am looking forward to week 2 together! I also send home a paper newsletter each week. This website will be very general as there are these other two avenues for getting information and, to be frank, the multiple updates at different places is redundant and time-consuming. I will post each week here for general overviews. MATH: We talked about estimating and symmetry. READING: We talked about the organization of books (titles, page numbers), shopped for evidence of our inferencing (what page in the book made you think that?), and shopped for different punctuation marks (periods, exclamation points, question marks, and commas). SOCIAL: We are reviewing transition expectations, talking about being friends, and I am coaching them on saying to each other, "Please don't do that," when something happens they don't like, instead of always coming to the teacher. THANK YOU for the lovely support from home this week- a few folks stepped up last minute with snacks, I got notes for communication from a parent or two, and got permission slips after I called home. It's been a really good week in 104. Join us for a night out at The Promontory on Thursday February 1, 2018 from 6-8 pm featuring a performance by Bethany Pickens Trio! Your $40 advance ticket includes beer, wine and light appetizers.
Child care will be provided by Hyde Park Neighborhood Club (HPNC) from 5:45-8:30 pm for $20/child + $10/sibling, including dinner and fun! Please note that the day following the event, Friday Feb 2, is a non-attendance day for students.
